Pregnancy in Athletes

Pregnancy in athletes who are just beginning their career can meet a lack of support from many persons. Female athletes risk a lot when they turn out to be pregnant. For some female athletes, pregnancy may indicate the end of their career.

Pregnancy in athletes does not have to mean the end of the career of an athlete who is just beginning to shine in their chosen sport. Pregnant athletes can safely continue training for a significant period during the pregnancy. Even female athletes who play contact sports don’t have to stop participating in their sport immediately when they become pregnant.

Pregnancy in athletes on school teams has been met with exclusion from teams, for fear of legal action if something goes wrong while an athlete is on the field. During pregnancy, athletes may follow their usual routine, lifting weights and participating in aerobic activity. A doctor or other healthcare provider can give further advice to an athlete on any questions they might have, but it is generally safe for pregnant athletes to train.

For female athletes at the beginning of their career, or female athletes in college hoping to make advancements in their career, pregnancy may deny them the chance to play at critical times, when scouts are on hand to observe their skills and make decisions that affect their future. Pregnant athletes can safely continue a moderate exercise routine without risk to themselves or their baby.
