Painter Jacob Lawrence came to Harlem during the 1930s, when he was still a teenager. When his family arrived in Harlem, the area was at its peak of energy so far. There were many leading black scientists, singers, artists, writers and philosophers who were also there and they helped to influence the young man.

Within two years after he arrived in Harlem, Jacob Lawrence began his studies at the Harlem Art Workshop. He was mentored by the artists Augusta Savage and Charles Alston. This mentoring perhaps influenced his decision to teach and encourage other young artists.
