About one in every thirteen people in the USA lives in the state of Texas, and more move to the Lone Star State every day. Many quickly add their voices to the chorus of natives who proclaim the country’s only ex-Republic to be the likely vacation spot of the gods. “Native” bumper stickers abound on the streets and freeways of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. These are joined by more than a few stickers that proudly proclaim some version or other of, “I wasn’t borned in Texas but I got here as fast as I could.”
Clearly, the state has mastered the art of assimilation.Whether new to the state or a fifth-generation native, Texans everywhere seem to revere the four leading symbols of their home state: the state outline, the bluebonnet blossom, the lone star and the tricolor flag featuring that single star. Simple yet striking in red, white and blue; the Texas flag is both a nod to inclusion in the fifty United States and a reminder that Texas once stood alone. It’s no wonder that good Texans everywhere revere their flag.
Whether you’re a newcomer or your great-great-great-great grandpappy was growing cotton on the banks of the Trinity back in ought-seven, you can never have too many versions of the Texas flag. Bumper stickers, however, aren’t enough: here are ten more ways to that you (or a friend) can show proper devotion to your home state – native or adopted.
The Big Stuff
Texas is big (and don’t you forget it!), so it makes sense that the flag and flag-themed products might be pretty large. Here are some of the biggest…
The Flag Itself
You’ll want to show your love for Texas by flying the state flag every day and night of the year, so you need a quality flag instead of one of those printed plastic things made in, well, you know… This giant five by 8-foot flag is sewn of heavy-duty nylon instead of just printed on a sheet of polyester, designed to last for years and years of full-time waving in the breeze. Maybe best of all, this here Texas flag is made in the good ol’ U S of A.
Norman Bates would never have attacked a bather behind this Texas-flag theme shower curtain, because there’s a better-than-even chance that there was a concealed handgun on the other side! All kidding aside, why limit your love of Texas to the family room (and kitchen and bedroom and front yard…) when you can hang this washable polyester 70-inch square shower curtain in the “facility”?
On those cold nights (like, when it gets below 50 degrees in Houston) you can warm yourself both inside and out by wrapping yourself in a 50” by 80” fleece throw that’s been printed with a symbol of the pride of Texas. And when it’s not keeping you warm, you can drape your throw over the back of the sofa to remind everyone of just what state you consider home.
You can adore your favorite state at just about any scale: just because Texas is big as all outdoors doesn’t mean the flag has to be room-sized. Here are a handful of more subtle reminders of the Lone Star State. Smaller does not mean less love!
Warm on the Inside
Whether you’re tailgating at a Texans or Cowboys game, a college game, a high-school game or a peewee outing, those December evenings can get a little cool –all the way down to forty degrees sometimes! What better way to warm yourself from the inside out than to have a little nip from this Texas flag-themed flask. No one says you have to fill it with bourbon – there are now a couple of distilleries making whiskey in Texas!
Of course over most of Texas, air-conditioning season lasts at least seven months (and maybe more). So you’d better be ready to keep those cold drinks cold even if you’re sitting on the patio or taking a picnic to a local park. Although many Yankees have never heard of a “Koozie,” most Texans have a couple dozen of the handy drink sleeves around the house. But is any of yours emblazoned with the Texas flag? This one is!
Continuing our theme of hot and cold, here’s how your favorite Texas-loving cook protects her (or his) fingers from hot pots and oven racks: it’s a Texas flag-themed oven mitt. This all-cotton, machine-washable mitt proudly proclaims your favorite kitchen-master’s love of all things Lone Star, even while it’s preventing painful burns around the stove, oven or grill. Yee-hah!
No, it’s not to help you quit smoking (or dippin’, for that matter), it’s a reminder for anyone who passes by that you love the Lone Star State. This standard-sized tactical patch (it’s 2 inches by 3 inches) is designed to fit on tactical caps, but it attaches to just about anything that has a matching Velcro® space. The patch’s subdued silver finish dresses up hats, bags, jackets; almost any camo item you can carry.
No matter where they go, true Texans will want to make certain everyone around them knows they’re from the greatest state in the Union. Here are our final three opportunities to share your love for the Lone Star State
Dry it Off
Once you’ve finished showering behind your Texas flag-theme shower curtain, here’s your chance to towel off on yet another reminder of the Lone Star State, an all-cotton towel printed with the same flag. It’s almost too pretty to get wet! Of course, at 20” by 50” it will serve you even better on the beach: no that no damn-Yankee would ever dare kick sand in your face when you’re sunning on this towel!
…but with these distinctive Texas flag luggage tags, your bag will be instantly recognizable as it travels around the conveyor belt at the airport. These heavy-duty plastic tags (packaged in pairs) come with leather straps to attach to your bag and have a card on the back for your contact information. Everyone at the airport will know your trip started at DFW, DAL, HOU or IAH!
There will be no mistaking where you call home when you don this handsome all-cotton shirt in the Texas flag pattern. Available in men’s, women’s and kids’ sizes, the shirt is pieced together from fabric instead of just a printed pattern. Look around a while and you can even find a short-sleeved version – but whichever you wear, you’ll be saying “I’m from Texas!” with pride.
No matter whether you’re sporting a Texas flag shirt or have a discreet Texas flag-themed flask tucked in an inside pocket, here’s a chance to show your love for the Lone Star State. Wear it – or sip it – with pride!
