Texas Cinco de Mayo activities and festivals are a good way to experience what the Lone Star State has to offer. Whether you are a tourist or a resident who rarely takes time off to enjoy Texas’ natural beauty, the celebration at this time will expose you to more of what the area has to offer.



Cinco de Mayo is celebrated throughout the United States and in Mexico. The festival marks the anniversary of an 1862 victory over the French army. In 1861, France had invaded Mexico but the Mexican allies defeated the French on May 5, 1862 in the Battle of Puebla. The day is used now to celebrate the achievements of people of Mexican heritage. Denver, San Francisco and Texas host some of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States.

If you enjoy barbeques, you can find Texas Cinco de Mayo activities that are centered on this outdoors event. Barbeque is a traditional way of cooking beef in this part of the United States and there are actually several different traditions in Texas, when it comes to creating the perfect BBQ dish.

The type of grilled meat recipe that you enjoy if you visit the state during the festival will depend on where you end up eating. East, South, Central and West Texas all have their own way to do barbeque. On May 4, 2013, there will be a barbeque and fish cook off at the Palacios in Matagorda County, Texas. Similar events will be held along the gulf coast.

Each location will have live music. There will also be amateur athletes from all around the area participating in 1K and 5K runs. You can enjoy the soft sand beaches of the Texas Gulf Coast while you participate in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The Padre Island National Seashore is the world’s longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island beach.

Victoria will host family oriented Texas Cinco de Mayo activities and festivals on May 4, 2013. You will be able to enjoy Hispanic foods, crafts and contests. There will also be artistes there from the Gulf Coast of Texas as well.

Sonora will have children’s activities, arts and crafts booths and entertainment in the Sutton County Park. May 4 will also be the crowning of Miss Cinco de Mayo in Sonora. Sonora is located right in the middle of Texas. People usually enjoy visiting the Caverns of Sonora, located on Interstate 10.

  • Van Horn- Second and Austin Streets
